Animation of a B-Spline figure
In both cases databases were obtained with a digitalisation laser: from a face of mannequin in 1988, from a real face in 1990. Databases are regular grids of points what gives them a structure of "B-Spline surface". The texture (possibly the color) is just one supplementary coordinate (three in the case of the color). When we saw the realistic face appearing on the screen for the first time, we had the feeling that a new stage in computer image was arriving.
